Accounts & PR pathways
For people who like communication, planning, building relationships and keeping work moving.
What helps you stand out
Agencies tend to favour tertiary-qualified graduates, and all types of degrees are considered.
However, if you've got an academic background in business, management, marketing or advertising, it certainly won't do any harm.
What future employers are really looking for are curious minds, critical-thinking skills, and an aptitude for teamwork and creativity.
How you've spent your time outside study is also valuable. Perhaps you've demonstrated great organisational skills through university clubs, or created an outlet for your writing through a blog. Whatever it is, make sure you share your whole self in your CV, cover letter or video introduction when applying for a role.
Getting industry-ready
You may not yet know the ins and outs of how an agency works or the specifics of an account management role, but there are plenty of ways to familiarise yourself with the advertising industry. Following blogs, listening to podcasts, and studying ads wherever you see them is a good starting point.
From there, you may want to familiarise yourself with the different advertising agencies that exist in Aotearoa. They all have slightly different cultures, and you may decide to set your sights on a few agencies that really appeal to you.
However, don't get too set on joining one particular agency. The most important thing is getting your foot in the door and joining the industry.

Other ways in...
Below you can find links to all Comms Council member agencies. They may advertise jobs or provide career info directly.
Check out their websites and identify the creative and PR agencies amongst them.
Advertising agencies looking for staff will often list vacancies on job boards like SEEK and Trade Me Jobs, as well as LinkedIn.
Get to know the different job titles so you can set alerts and be among the first to know when listings go live.
Sometimes, getting a foot in the door is all about networking. You never know who you might already know who could help by making an introduction or connecting you with someone they know.
Build your network, ask around and get comfortable with LinkedIn.
